sadly disappointed.
having read all the positive reviews, I was very excited indeed to eat at Colleen's, however I can definitely say that based on my first visit I will likely not be returning -- or may be very daring indeed and try other things on the menu.
I had a rather poorly-mixed roasted beet salad that really _could_ have been something special noting the components involved, but was just rather uninspired.
... but what I remember most vividly was the Ahi sashimi. What was delivered to my table was the stringiest, most poorly-cut, soft (which is _really_ bad for a firm fish such as Ahi), most uninspired and flavourless slices of Ahi tataki I have ever seen -- which is pretty bad, in that this is Maui and the quality of fish available is quite high.
Sorry to say but I guess I could say the word I'm looking for to describe the cooking is "lazy".
The wine list was decent and the service was OK, however.
Meh

One of the WORST experiences EVER!.
My family and I dined at the restaurant for the first time tonight, and were sorely disappointed with the experience. We were seated when the restaurant was not very full, and were barely acknowledged by the wait staff. We ordered drinks and pizza, and waited close to an hour before the pizza was brought out. During that wait, none of the servers stopped by the table, or even followed up with the kitchen staff to find out what was taking so long. Finally, I went up to the counter to ask about our food, and it was brought out within minutes. The pizza was COLD! We were tired and starving, my children were fussy, so we ate the cold pizza anyway. When we mentioned it to our server, she acknowledged that our order had been put in delivery boxes and forgotten. Immediately after serving us the cold pizza, our server brings us the bill and did not ask if we'd like to order anything else, and did not mention dessert. She never came back to pick up our payment, so I went up to the counter and stood in line. The woman at the counter helped the person in front of me, and then blatantly asked the man behind me if she could help him. Had he not told her, "I believe she (me) was here first", she would have ignored me! When I presented my payment to her, she rudely said that the server was supposed to take the payment. Instead of immediately ringing me up, she waited for my server to come back to the register, who then took my payment and then took the liberty of taking some of my change!
It was by far, one of the most upsetting, and frustrating dining experiences of my life.
An Awful Experience.
Being a Haiku resident for some time now, I have frequented Collen's Bake Shoppe over the past years. When I first began visiting the restaurant nestled in the charming town of Haiku, I was pleased. The service was great, the food was delicious. Somehow, over the past year all that has changed. A few days ago I had my last visit to the said restaurant. The service was the worst I have experienced in any public place in a long time. I ordered a side of french fries to share with my 18 month-old daughter and as we finished the basket I was horrified to feel a large piece of glass in my mouth. Yes, glass. It seems there were many pieces of shattered glass throughout our fries, but being covered with Hawaiian rock-salt, we hadn't noticed until it was too late.
I brought the glass to my servers attention and her first reaction was to say the glass was not from the restaurant and basically dismiss the entire incident. After that she completely avoided our table for fifteen minutes and then had the nerve to ask us if we wanted a box to take the food home. It has been one day since the occurance and I have been praying to God that my child doesn't fall ill to the glass shards in her little stomach. When I told the waitress of my daughter's participation in eating the tainted fries, she simply sighed "Aaw," and went on with her duties. Colleen's is a joke. I was once a fan, but after seeing how they treat something so serious is a sign that it is a beautiful place to eat it, but I would never trust the food again.
If you plan to dine in at Colleen's, I advide you to fully inspect your food, or rather not eat a thing from the kitchen.
