Nice, but could use updating.. I stayed her in July of 2007. The buffet is great, the coi pond is beautiful, but the rooms really really need to be updated. The rooms were very clean, just very old.

I still liked it here!

What a gem!. Called here at the last minute and got a great rate compared to the other nearby resorts. Front desk staff here was very friendly compared to the other resorts I called who came off somewhat snobbish. Stayed in a partial oceanview room and was not disappointed, it was quite a good view actually! The rooms are very large, modern, and well appointed, with a large private lanai. The grounds are well kept and beautiful. The pool area is very nice, and the hotel's large beach is quiet and not overrun with throngs of people. I liked the Maui Prince so much, I booked my next two nights in Waikiki at their sister property the Hawaii Prince!

Understated elegance on a secluded Maui beach.. The Scene
Once upon a time, Makena was considered "the boonies," known more for its nude sunbathers than for its resort hotels. Now the area is a favorite playground for well-heeled visitors who luxuriate in posh suites on this landscaped oceanfront stretch. This place is serene and understated, and the service is excellent.

The Details
The rooms have a comfortable Hawaiian feel to them, as well as fantastic ocean views. You can sit on your lanai looking out on the islands of Molokini, Kahoolawe and Lanai. On the other side of the property, the dormant volcano of Haleakala greets you with its awesome size. Despite the frenzied growth along Makena, this hotel remains set apart on 1,800 acres. It's a good location for swimming, tennis, catamaran sailing and golf, with 36 championship holes. The road outside takes you to Makena's Big Beach (the last undeveloped beach of its size on Maui), LaPerouse Bay and through Maui's last lava flow, which spilled out of Haleakala around 1790.
