Tips for Outback Kihei

August 24, 2008

Australian tchotchkes and brews give this quintessentially American restaurant a distinctive Down Under flavor.. In Short
Boomerangs, Aussie flags, kangaroo portraits and faux aboriginal art honor the homeland's wilderness, but Outback delivers a polished version of rusticity with varnished blond-wood booths with matching wainscoting and casually uniformed waitstaff. Besides more than a half-dozen cuts of steak, diners can pick from large-portioned entrees like ribs, chops and shrimp or chicken "on the barbie." The Bloomin' Onion, a large onion dipped in batter and deep-fried, is an appetizer with a following.

It's where the locals attempt to escape the tourists but don't always succeed.. Yes it's crowded. Yes, there's a long wait. Yes, it's more expensive than your one at home. But, it's one of the best steaks on Maui for the money and we're used to paying more for everything since we're on an island where everything's expensive. The kitchen can be a bit haphazard and things occasionally don't arrive in their proper order but the food is really tasty and we like it. The line outside says it all. It's a good and reasonably priced meal, considering you're on Maui. The staff is great and does everything possible to make certain your meal is to your liking. If the line is long, consider eating in the bar area, which is usually a shorter wait.

An overpriced version of your neighborhood outback. Well...hubby craved outback on our Maui vacation so we went. We waited 45 minutes for a table, just to find out our pager wasn't working properly (I think it was the hostess who wasn't working properly). Once seated it was a while before we got greeted by a cheesy server who was obviously trying to work a tip, he must have asked if we were 'just mauied' 3 times. The food took forever, our steaks were over cooked, and everything was WAY overpriced. Don't waste your time if your on vacation, it isn't worth it!
