Kihei >Food & Dining > Capische?
If you can, do Il Teatro.
We just had the honor of dining with the family of the chefs (Chris & Brian) last night. I've had several fantastic meals at great restaurants in my life - but at the end of this meal I could say without hesitation "this is the best meal I've ever experienced". And it was.
The price tag for their personal chef experience (Il Teatro) is NOT for the faint of heart. We didn't ask b/c we'd been referred by the chef's wife and had enjoyed our conversation with her. I'm glad we didn't, b/c I would've talked myself out of it based on the cost. We paid 2-3x more than we've ever paid for a meal before - but it was worth every penny. Not something we can afford monthly right now, but if I could I WOULD! Capische is NOT as expensive - this was for a FULL pre-fixe menu at Il Teatro including all of our drinks.
These 2 chefs (with 1 vision... hehe) are brilliant artists who take their food seriously. They made special note that they choose their wines FIRST and then make the food to compliment it. It was a fantastic pairing - for each of the 5-6 different wines we received.
I couldn't blither enough great things about this place - so if you're feeling like splurging a little don't go to any of the well known, over-advertised places on Maui. Go to this place - you'll end up paying about the same (or a little more if you go to Il Teatro) and I guarantee that the meal will be top notch.
To top it off - the people were fantastic. Brian and Chris (and their significant others) are fantastic people with great personalities who really made the whole experience a great, entertaining affair. They even anticipated when we were getting up from the table and had the valet bring our car around so it was arriving just as we walked out the door. Just one more way that they nailed the attention to detail I would expect from such an establishment. Best of luck to them - and make sure that you book this place on your itinerary!
Good, but nothing special, and overpriced.
On a recent trip to Maui, I ate at Capische twice, as it was in my hotel. Everything was pretty good, but nothing special, and I was disappointed considering that it is such an expensive restaurant. Some elements of both meals were very good--particularly the lobster ravioli and ahi bruschetta appetizer--but the rest was good but unmemorable. Dishes were too salty and rich, and the flavor of the food never really presented. The veal scallopini was just one step up from the Olive Garden, and the desserts were boring.
I did really enjoy the panoramic views of the ocean, the restaurant was very attractive, and the live jazz was a nice touch. The service was fine and attentive. I was also disappointed by the overpriced wine list--lots of bottles from $300-$2000, but hardly any under $125.
I know that dining out in Maui is very expensive, but I expected much more creativity and flavor from a restaurant that charges $45-75 an entree. It was good but nothing special, but there are far better restaurants on Maui for the price.
Gorgeous view, amazing food & ambiance!!!. My husband and I went here during our honeymoon in Maui and it was by far the best dinner we've ever had!!! The view from the balcony is beautiful and since there are a limited number of seats it was very intimate. They were very accomodating when we asked to move to a table with a better view. We got to watch the sun set as we ate and it was ultimately romantic. Our server was an angel - he brought me the best glass of Riesling I've ever tasted and even wrote down the name of it per my request. I'm a vegetarian but don't really like salads much, and Capische made me the most divine pasta dish with vodka sauce I have ever had (it wasn't on the menu, I simply asked for what I wanted and they made it). My husband tried his first ever dish of Quail and simply raved about it. Dessert was also to die for (this was about 9 months ago and I can't remember what we had, only that it was fabulous). We were staying at the Blue Diamond Resort so this restaurant was right in our hotel. It was our favorite night in Maui, and I can't wait to visit again!!! (be prepared though, it IS expensive).
