Awful service for overpriced food..
My boyfriend and I eat out a lot in our home city and both have worked in the service industry, so we are familiar, to say the least, with eating out. We also understand that restaurants in Maui don't have the same resources or standards that a big city has, and probably would be more lax then a usual fine restaurant. With that said, our experience at Mala was absolutely terrible, and we will never go back.
We had yet to eat out on our vacation and decided to finally have a nice night, just the two of us.
We were seated promptly in the over crowed and extremely noisy restaurant and brought water and chips almost immediately. But then, we waited. And waited and waited. We waited for someone to even speak to us at our table for FIFTEEN Minutes. And, once the server sauntered over to our table, there was no greeting and no apology for taking so long, just "what do you want to drink?" This kind of behavior is fine at a Red Robin, or some random burger joint, but for the outrageous prices their menu (11.5 for a poorly made cocktail--I had to send it back--) the service should be what the extra dollars go to. The calamari was brought briskly, and tasted like something out of a freezer, we decided to leave. We paid and politely left.
My boyfriend was upset because the lovely evening he had planned for us had been ruined by their awful service and sub-par food.
Take my advice, and don't waste your money on this restaurant that asks fine dining prices, but is nothing more than a bad diner with a lot of pomp and circumstance.
(We ended up going to Merrimans in Napili, and it was WONDERFUL...go there!)
The worst service of my life! And I eat out a lot!.
I have never been so mad at a restaurant in all my life. I avoided writing a review for a few weeks hoping I'd calm dowm, but now just thinking about it gets me all riled up again!! I made a reservation a few weeks in advance for 8 people. Well at the last minute we wound up with 20, so I called to see if they could accomodate. They said yes of course, but they had a party coming in at 8 so if we could not linger it would be great. Ok, fine. Fair enough, I've waited tables before I get it. We ALL arrive on time at 6pm. The waiter didn't come to take our drink order until 6:30. Drinks come, but doesn't ask to take our dinner order until 7. We were all there waiting, hungry, and ready to order entrees by 6:30. Food arrives at 7:30, not too bad, but we had JUST finished eating at 8. The manager comes over and FLIPS OUT and says "we had an agreement, you said you'd be out by 8, you all have to leave RIGHT NOW". Um, we finished eating like 30 seconds ago lady and you HAVEN'T GIVEN US THE CHECK. Why don't we just pull that total our of our butts. Perhaps if your waiters HAD TAKEN OUR ORDER IN A TIMELY MANNER we would be done. 20 people takes a few minutes to sort out a bill, everyone was throwing in money. The manager comes back, lectures us AGAIN. Um, we're trying to pay you, skank. The party pulls up in a bus and comes in and the manager has the nerve to tell the party "they won't leave", so the party ring leader comes over and starts screaming at our table to leave. He had booked this party 3 months ago blah blah,um...it's 8:07, you can wait FIVE MINUTES while we pay. What kind of establishment allows customers to come over and tell other customers to leave. CUSTOMERS WHO JUST RACKED UP A $2000 bill in 2 hrs!!!
So in summary, AWFUL hellacious, rude, disrespectful, obnoxious, slow, miserable service. There are no stars low enough for the horrible way our party was treated for no reason. Boycott this place on basic principle.
