Not great, but not bad.

My husband and I always stay at Hotel Hana Maui when in Hana. No mystery there, they're the only game in town when it comes to a high end hotel in the East Side.

I recommend their Oceanfront Cottages, the ones with the jaccuzzi on the lanai. All day, you can hear the surf break. Rockin'!

You can also dispense with the whole valet thing since you can just drive up to your cottage when coming in from the beach or fresh from your loco moco scouting trip. (across the street).

Anyhoo, not bad. Not great, but not bad.

Maui's most distinctive luxury resort property.

The Scene
This resort was built by Paul Fagan in the late 1940s and is staffed by warm, smiling locals. Acting as refuge for the Beatles, supermodels and wealthy hippies alike over the years, it has a reputation as not only the ultimate hideaway, but also the most Hawaiian of Hawaii's hotels.

The Details
The 67 acres are fragrant with the blossoms of tropical flowering trees. Rooms are scattered among the palms and landscaped gardens in private, generously sized bungalows and sea-ranch cottages. You won't find TVs, clocks or air-conditioning, but most guests couldn't care less. A restored plantation house on the grounds can be used as an executive retreat or exclusive romantic getaway. Caroline Kennedy honeymooned here, and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton used it for a private escape. Chef Larry Quirit serves contemporary cuisine with local touches. For the active, there's snorkeling, kayaking, bicycle and horseback riding, tennis and a private beach at Hamoa. Tours take full advantage of the area's waterfalls, jungle forest and ancient sites.
